Purpleheart
Purpleheart Lumber @ Rare Woods USA
Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) is a Central and South American hardwood famous for its vivid purple color, and it's also one of the toughest, stiffest woods available.Freshly cut, it's a dull brown, but within minutes it turns rich purple. Over time, light exposure darkens it to brown with purple undertones, and a finish with UV inhibitors helps slow this. Exposing fresh-cut wood to sunlight for a few days can deepen the purple before finishing. The grain is straight to wavy, sometimes irregular, and the texture fine to medium with a nice luster. It works, glues and finishes well with sharp tools, but dull blades can overheat it and draw out a sticky black resin that needs sanding off. Take light passes and keep blades clean.Purpleheart is water-resistant and very durable, making it popular for decking, boatbuilding and even truck bed flooring. It's also used for furniture, flooring, inlay, cutting boards, carving and turnings, and it's a favorite for adding a pop of color to mixed-wood projects.
