Species: Cedar – Aromatic
Aromatic Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana), also called Eastern Red Cedar, grows across the eastern half of the United States. It's firm, stable and durable, resistant to rot and insects, and loved for its fresh, natural scent.Bright pinkish-red heartwood contrasts with pale yellow sapwood, and plenty of small knots add to its character, so it's rarely stained or painted. The trees grow slowly and seldom exceed 50 feet, so wide boards and clear, knot-free pieces are rare. The color mellows toward a warmer reddish-brown over time. The grain is fine and the texture even, and while knots and some silica can complicate things, it generally works well and glues and finishes nicely. Many people leave it unfinished to keep the aroma, and a light sanding every few years refreshes the scent. It's the classic wood for hope chests, closet linings and drawer bottoms, where its scent keeps clothing fresh and masks less pleasant smells. It's also used for boxes, bows, carving, fencing, birdhouses and outdoor furniture. Despite the name, it's a juniper, not a true cedar.
