Species: Pear – Swiss
Swiss Pear (Pyrus communis) is the European pear tree, and it has long been an important hardwood across Europe, where many consider it one of the region's finest. European makers use it much as Americans use Black Cherry. It's known for its fine, straight grain, smooth, even texture and soft pink color, which ranges from pale to medium and deepens after cutting. It's usually steamed, which evens out the color to a warm pinkish-brown and relieves stress so it dries flat. Its easy working properties make it a favorite with craftsmen, carvers and turners, and it holds fine detail beautifully. It can dull cutters, so keep blades sharp. It isn't durable outdoors.Steady demand in Europe means relatively little reaches the US. It's used for musical instruments, such as recorders and woodwinds, carving, inlay, drawing instruments, turnings, fine furniture and veneer. It also takes dye well and has been dyed black as an ebony substitute.
