Species: Satinwood – East Indian
East Indian Satinwood (Chloroxylon swietenia), also called Ceylon Satinwood, comes from southern India and Sri Lanka and is a truly exquisite tropical hardwood. It was a favorite of 18th-century English cabinetmakers such as Sheraton and Hepplewhite. The heartwood is light to medium golden yellow, and the sapwood is paler but not always clearly separated. Premium boards show mottled or rippled figure resembling satin fabric, with chatoyance from subtle to dramatic, especially on quartersawn stock. The grain is usually interlocked, and its density makes it challenging to work, but it turns, glues and finishes superbly with a shimmering luster. Take light passes to avoid tear-out, and use dust extraction, as the dust can irritate. The trees are small, reaching only 40 to 50 feet with slender trunks, and exports are restricted, so supply in the US is limited and long boards are rare and command a premium. It's used for fine furniture, inlay, marquetry, turnings, veneer and specialty pieces.
