Turning Squares – Bubinga

Our Bubinga turning squares come in range of sizes and are excellent quality lumber.

The sizes are all rough-guides, but are basically accurate.

If you have very strict size criteria, please just drop us an email to confirm they will meet your expectations.

The photographs are representative of the stock you will receive. You won't typically received surfaced blanks, but we surface a few on the photographs to give you an idea of what the lumber looks like.

Bubinga (Guibourtia spp.), also called Kevazingo, is one of the most popular African imports. It comes from equatorial Africa, and several closely related species are sold under the name, so color and figure vary a lot from board to board. The base color ranges from pinkish-red to light and medium brown, often with purple-red streaks. Figured boards can show pommele, waterfall, mottled or flamed figure, with strong chatoyance under finish, and the best pieces can sell for more than many rosewoods. It's dense and heavy, with an interlocked grain and a fine, even texture.Despite its density, it works well with sharp tools, turns cleanly and finishes to a high polish. Interlocked boards can tear out, so take light final passes, and its natural oils mean gluing benefits from wiping joints with a solvent first. The trees grow very large, so big live-edge slabs are available, and it's a favorite for desks, conference tables and fine furniture. It's in steady demand with veneer mills and guitar makers too. It's sometimes called African Rosewood, but it isn't a true rosewood, and not everything sold under that name is Bubinga.
