Cocobolo

Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) is a true rosewood from the Pacific side of Central America, and one of the most sought-after woods in the region. It’s prized by furniture makers and guitar builders for its spectacular range of colors and its density, stability and durability.
Colors cover almost the whole spectrum, from orange and red to deep brown with dark streaks, often with purple and yellow highlights. Pieces from Costa Rica and Nicaragua can be especially colorful, while Mexican Cocobolo and Nicaraguan “Black Coco” are favorites with furniture makers. Freshly cut surfaces are vivid and darken over time.
It’s very oily and dense, turns beautifully and polishes to a high shine, often needing little more than buffing. The oils can make gluing tricky, so wipe joints with a solvent first. Cocobolo produces a lot of fine dust, and like other rosewoods it can irritate skin, and some people become sensitized. Wear a respirator and eye protection when sanding, cover up, and clear your shop afterwards.
It’s used for fine furniture, guitars, knife and gun handles, pool cues, pens and turnings.
Listed in CITES Appendix II, like all Dalbergia species, so international shipments of the wood need CITES permits. Finished musical instruments are generally exempt. Classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
