Rosewood – Vietnamese

Vietnamese Rosewood (Dalbergia cochinchinensis), also called Siamese or Thai Rosewood, grows in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It’s one of the densest and most stable rosewoods.
The heartwood is mostly in shades of brown, often with red, orange and yellow, and the pale yellow sapwood is easy to spot. The grain is usually straight, occasionally interlocked. When new, it has a strong, sweet fragrance.
Its pores are very small for a rosewood, so it sands smooth and finishes beautifully with a wonderful luster. It’s hard-wearing and resistant to rot and insects, and it’s so dense and stable that traditional furniture made from it is often joined without glue or nails.
Its qualities have made it hugely popular for traditional Chinese “Hongmu” furniture, and heavy demand has made it very scarce. We’re unlikely to be able to restock, so what we have is it. It’s best suited to specialty pieces, turnings, boxes and veneer, where a little of this remarkable wood goes a long way.
Listed in CITES Appendix II, like all Dalbergia species, so international shipments of the wood need CITES permits. Finished musical instruments are generally exempt. Assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
