Basswood

Basswood (Tilia americana) is called Lime or Linden in Europe. It’s one of the softest and lightest hardwoods, and it’s been a favorite carving wood for centuries.
The color ranges from pale off-white to pale yellow or very light brown. Straight grain, a fine, even texture and its soft nature make it exceptionally easy to work, and it glues and finishes well, though it doesn’t steam-bend well. It’s strong for its weight but dents easily, so a hard protective finish is a good idea.
Besides carving, Basswood has become a popular electric guitar body wood over the past few decades thanks to its light, resonant quality. It’s also used for veneer, models and other utility work. It isn’t durable outdoors, so keep it inside.
Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
