Ebony – Black & White

Black and White Ebony (Diospyros spp.), better known to guitar makers as Pale Moon Ebony, is a Southeast Asian true ebony and one of the most striking, and challenging, woods we sell.
Bold jet-black lines run across a creamy pale yellow base, in patterns that vary hugely from piece to piece. The grain can be straight, wavy or irregular, with a fine texture and nice luster, and it’s fairly moderate in hardness for an ebony. Once dry, it machines, turns, glues and finishes well.
Drying is the hard part. The wood tends to crack, check and move unless it’s waxed immediately after cutting, and it’s best left in its wax to air-dry slowly. Hurrying it rarely ends well, and even slow-dried pieces can move. When you cut it, re-seal the ends and let fresh boards settle before final machining.
That’s why craft-sized pieces are far more common than large boards, which command a premium. It’s prized for guitar fretboards and bridges, inlay, turnings, boxes and accents. Supply is always limited, so we’re pleased to offer what we can.
Not listed in the CITES Appendices or on the IUCN Red List. Laos banned exports of rosewood and ebony in 2016, so supply is very limited.
