Greenheart

Greenheart (Chlorocardium rodiei) is a dense, strong hardwood native to the tropical rainforests of northern South America, especially Guyana. It has olive to brown tones, often with tinges of green that give it its name.
It’s renowned for its strength, durability and resistance to decay. With a density of over 1,000 kg/m³, it holds up better than most woods against moisture, insects, rot and even marine borers. The grain is straight to interlocked with a fine, even texture.
Its density makes it hard work to machine, so use sharp, carbide-tipped tools, and pre-drill for fasteners. Splinters can be painful and may become infected, so wear gloves when handling rough stock.
That toughness is why it’s a go-to wood for marine and heavy outdoor work, prized for its strength and resilience in harsh conditions. Greenheart is commonly used for piers, docks, bridges, wharves, lock gates, seawalls and retaining walls, as well as decking, cladding, fencing and fishing rods.
Not listed in the CITES Appendices but is listed on the IUCN Red List as being data deficient.
